Faith

“FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” ~ Hebrews 11:1

It’s zero degrees Fahrenheit. Every twig and spruce bough is coated with hoar frost, and a foot of snow blankets the ground. More, where the fierce winter winds have caused drifting. You feel as if winter will last forever. But you have FAITH that spring will come in a few months, followed by summer. You KNOW the snow will melt, the grass will turn green, the leaves will grow and the garden will yield its produce in abundance. You KNOW, because it happens every year.

“FAITH is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of autosuggestion.” ~ Napoleon Hill

Self talk is vitally important if we want to have faith. A good, positive self talk is the only thing that will replace the negative crap we tell ourselves all the time. It’s the only way to overwrite the negative programs that run incessantly and automatically in the background, often where we don’t see them or hear them.

A couple of months ago I started down a new path. I need to lose more than 100 lbs of unnecessary baggage. I have a body scanner that tells me not only my weight, but muscle mass, body age and visceral fat, among other readings. It’s been a slow process, and sometimes it seems like nothing is changing except weight loss. But I KNOW I am on the right path. I will continue doing what I am doing, because I KNOW I will reach my goal within a year. It doesn’t matter that I don’t see results in every area. Just like the garden I plant in spring… From the moment I plant the seeds and water them, things begin to happen, but it takes a while before the little plants pop through the earth and begin to show their growth.

“Repetition of affirmation of ORDERS to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.” ~ Napoleon Hill

This is especially for the Green personality types, and anyone else who has a problem taking action. “ORDERS” means you are prodding yourself to take action.

Years ago when I was in Bible college, it was a tradition for the Junior class to come up with a motto for the Seniors to take with them as they graduated and began their new lives. The motto had to be short, and it had to prod them into action. “Fear not, for I am with you” wasn’t good enough, because it didn’t spur one into specific action. Some that I remember are:

“Commit thy way unto the Lord.”
“Walk humbly with thy God.”
“Henceforth unto Him.”

I think that’s what Mr. Hill is telling us in that quote. We need to spur ourselves into action. Self talk CREATES faith by retraining the subconscious mind. Taking action is what DEVELOPS our faith. Just as we need to exercise to develop and strengthen our muscles, so our faith needs to be developed and strengthened through use.
